Chapter One: Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study
Vocational training is an essential component of skill development and poverty alleviation, particularly in rural areas like Wukari Local Government Area (LGA) of Taraba State. Traditionally, vocational training programs have been delivered through face-to-face interactions and community-based initiatives. However, with the rise of digital technologies, vocational training is increasingly being conducted through online platforms, videos, mobile apps, and social media. Digital media offers significant advantages in expanding access to vocational training resources, enabling learners to acquire practical skills, certifications, and training outside the constraints of location and infrastructure. This study aims to explore the use of digital media in supporting vocational training in Wukari LGA, examining how these platforms are helping to equip individuals with the skills needed to enhance their livelihoods.

1.2 Statement of the Problem
In Wukari LGA, access to traditional vocational training facilities is limited, and many individuals are unable to attend training programs due to geographical, financial, or time constraints. Digital media has the potential to bridge this gap, but there is limited research on how it is currently being used to support vocational training in this region. This study will assess the extent to which digital media has been utilized to enhance vocational training in Wukari, and the impact it has had on the skills development of the local population.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

  1. To examine the use of digital media in supporting vocational training in Wukari LGA.
  2. To assess the impact of digital media on the skill development of individuals in Wukari.
  3. To identify the challenges and opportunities of using digital media for vocational training in Wukari LGA.

1.4 Research Questions

  1. How is digital media being used to support vocational training in Wukari LGA?
  2. What impact does digital media have on the skill development of individuals in Wukari?
  3. What are the challenges and opportunities of using digital media for vocational training in Wukari LGA?

1.5 Research Hypothesis

  1. Digital media significantly supports vocational training in Wukari LGA.
  2. Digital media positively influences skill development among individuals in Wukari.
  3. The use of digital media for vocational training presents both challenges and opportunities in Wukari LGA.

1.6 Significance of the Study
This study will provide insights into the role of digital media in enhancing vocational training opportunities in rural communities. The findings will inform vocational training institutions, government agencies, and NGOs in Wukari LGA on how to effectively utilize digital media to improve skill acquisition and enhance livelihoods.

1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study focuses on the use of digital media in supporting vocational training in Wukari LGA, Taraba State. It does not address other forms of training or examine vocational programs outside of this region.
